EBird is a project developed by the Cornell Ornithology Laboratory and the National Audubon Society of the US. In eBird you can store and recover any birding information you need anywhere in the world at any time. You can also access the entire historical database to find out what other bird watchers are reporting from different locations. The eBird database is used by birdwatchers, scientists, wildlife managers and conservationists who want to know more about the distribution and movement patterns of birds across the country and North America.
Objective: To teach the basic management of eBird and to standardize the techniques of observation and census of birds. TOPICS:
- Introduction to eBird as a tool for conservation - Best practices for monitoring results - Shorebirds and existing monitoring programs in eBird - Open discussion: common measures for the monitoring of shorebirds |

The North American Banding Council (NABC) is a NGO whose members include representatives from various bird research organizations and ornithological societies who use bird banding as a tool in ornithological research, conservation, and management. The mission of the NABC is to promote sound and ethical bird-banding practices and techniques. NABC develops educational and training materials that promote best practices in bird capture and banding and has a voluntary certification process at the bander's assistant, bander and trainer level. In this way, NABC certification is designed to encourage standardized stepwise progressive bander development and encourage sharing of best practices.
This is a two day workshop with classroom and field components. Participants will share and discuss best practices for capture, handling and marking shorebirds. Topics will include: regulatory responsibilities, scientific and ethical standards of working with migratory birds, various capture methods, handling and biological sampling, working with various visual and electronic markers and data collection and management. Workshop participants are invited to take an optional exam* as a step towards NABC trainer or bander level certification. This will be followed by 1-night of field practice.
